Motivation and Goal Setting: Going Beyond Goal Setting

I just Googled the phrase "goal setting", and found pink uggs approximately 3,600,000 web pages that relate in some way to that phrase.  This shouldn't surprise us, because conventional wisdom is that goal setting is an important skill.       It is easy to document both through anecdotal evidence as well as through research that setting goals can help us achieve more.  There are hundreds of books, tapes, speeches, workshops, and websites that will provide us with tools and processes to set goals.  One would think for something as important as goal setting, with as many tools as there are available, that everyone would be a goal setter.      This however isn't the case.      While I could fill a book with the reasons why, there is one that is very important.        People don't set goals now because they didn't achieve the ones they set in the past.  They've followed the goal setting process they learned or read about, but the seminar or book stopped at the wrong time.  The seminar stopped with the setting of the goal.  That is like ending the game after the first play, then going to sit on the sidelines, while the goal is out on the playing field.      My advice to you, if you can identify with what you've just read is to stop worrying about goal setting. And start focusing on goal achieving.      In other words, stop worrying about which goal setting model to use, or which software to track your progress with.  Stop making the goal setting process the focus, and start putting the focus on goal achievement.      Here are three things you can do to put our focus on goal achievement and drastically increase your success:        1.  Get sick and tired.  It is often said that people really begin to reach new health goals when they become "sick and tired of being sick and tired." Achieving a goal means that you want something different than you have now.  To build your ongoing and sustaining drive to achieve the new item, knowledge or situation, you must become disgusted and dissatisfied with the current situation.  This doesn't mean that you should become bitter or grumpy, but rather it means to develop a healthy dissatisfaction with the way things are now (current profitability, the cycle time for new product development, or your inability to find a bathroom in Brazil).        2.  Get (and stay) excited about the result.  To sustain the challenges, setbacks and disappointments along your way to goal achievement, you must have another motivation as well.  You must really want the benefits that will come to you when the new goal is achieved.  Build a clear and compelling picture in your mind of what you will feel, sense, see, and believe once your goal has been achieved. Focus on the results you will gain from the goal, rather than just the goal itself.  This is important because in the end this is what you are after, not "just" the goaluggbootspinkitself.  As you work towards your goal, the goal might shift, but as long as the desired results remain clear, you have improved the likelihood of achieving the end result you desire.       3. Start a plan and get started.  Notice I didn't say to lay out a complete plan of all the steps between you and your goal.  If your goal is of any size and importance at all, it will require many steps, and it will be very difficult/impossible to identify them with any degree of certainty at the start.  Too many people think they need the perfect plan.  They delay starting so they can get the best information.  They want to talk to one more expert, read one more book, examine two more options.  Get started already!  Give yourself a clear idea of a general approach, and some clear first steps.  Allow yourself the luxury of knowing that the next specific steps will become clear as you stay on the path.       Doing these three things will drastically increase your success in achieving any goal you set.      Actually, let me say it more strongly.  Until you have these three factors going for you in large (although potentially varying) amounts, you won't achieve the goals you set.  You will lose momentum.  You will lose focus.  You will lose pink uggs bootshope.  You won't be able to overcome the first setback.  And you will fall into the convenient and comfortable thinking that goal setting "doesn't work" for you or that you need a new tool, a new technique or a new guru to help you set "better" goals.      Whether you are setting goals for yourself, the team you lead or for your organization at large, take this advice to heart.        Focus less energy on setting the perfect goal and spend more time preparing yourself for ultimate success.  Stop worrying about the resolution, and start focusing on the resolve that will be required to succeed.      Doing this will bring you greater success, less frustration and will help you and your organization move closer and closer to your potential.

An Irishman

An Irishman walks into a bar in Dublin, orders three pints of Guinness and sits in the back of the room, drinking a sip out of each one in turn. When he finishes them, he comes back to the bar and orders three more.uggbootspink  The bartender asks him, "You know, a pint goes flat after I draw it; it would taste better if you bought one at a time." The Irishman replies, "Well, you see, I have two brothers. One is in America, the other in Australia, and I'm here in Dublin. When we all left home, we promised that we'd drink this way to remember the days when we drank together." The bartender admits that this is a nice custom, ugg pink  and leaves it there.

The Irishman becomes a regular in the bar, and always drinks the same way: ordering three pints and drinking them in turn. One day, he comes in and orders two pints. All the other regulars notice and fall silent. When he comes back to the bar for the second round, the bartender says, "I don't want to intrude on your grief, but I wanted to offer my condolences on your great loss." ugg pinkbootsThe Irishman looks confused for a moment, then a light dawns in his eye and he laughs. "Oh, no," he says, "Everyone's fine. I've just quit drinking."

China to launch Change-2 satellite at the end of 2010

China planned to launch the Chang'e-2, the country's second lunar probe, at the end of 2010, the State Administration of Science Technology and Industry for National Defense said Monday.

The Chang'e-2 was to test key soft landing technologies for theChang'e-3 and provide high-resolution photo images of the landing area, the administration said.

China has made progress on six key technologies of Chang'e-2, including the lunar capture, orbit control and the research on high-resolution stereo camera, it said.

Ye Peijian, chief designer of Chang'e-1, the country's first moon probe, said earlier that China's three-stage moon mission could be defined as "orbiting", "landing" and "returning". ugg pink

Chang'e-2 and Chang'e-3 are part of the second phase of the country's lunar exploration program.

The Chang'e-1 lunar probe was launched in October 2007 as the first step of China's three-stage moon mission.

"Chang'e" is named after a legendary Chinese moon goddess.

Behold, two mediocre mice

THE Roman poet Horace might have been summing up today¡¯s European Union when he wrote that ¡°the mountains will be in labour, and will give birth to a ridiculous mouse.¡± By choosing two virtual unknowns, tiffany silver with paltry political experience, as the first permanent president of the European Council and as the new EU foreign-policy supremo, Europe¡¯s leaders have made their union look ridiculous.

Both Belgium¡¯s Herman Van Rompuy and Britain¡¯s Catherine Ashton are decent in their way. Mr Van Rompuy has been a surprisingly effective Belgian prime minister, holding his fissiparous country together well enough for some to fret over his departure from domestic politics. Lady Ashton piloted the Lisbon treaty through the British House of Lords and has handled the European Commission¡¯s trade portfolio without falling out with her colleagues (unlike some predecessors), even if she has no foreign-policy background and has never been elected to anything. Both are suited to the endless rounds of consensus-building that the EU loves and lives by.

That alone is enough for some Europhiles to welcome these appointments. Yet they miss two points. The first is that the Van Rompuy-Ashton team was manifestly nobody¡¯s dream ticket. Mr Van Rompuy emerged only because weightier and better-known candidates, tiffany jewelry including Britain¡¯s Tony Blair, fell foul of the objections of one leader or another. Lady Ashton was the third or even fourth choice of Gordon Brown when Britain was offered the post. Picking people for their inoffensiveness, inexperience (both have been in their jobs for only a year), party affiliation, nationality or sex¡ªeverything, in fact, except their abilities¡ªis unlikely to lead to the best candidates.

The second mistake is to overlook the aims of the Lisbon treaty. Laboriously pushed through after six years (and three rejections by referendum), it seeks to give the EU a political role in the world to match its economic weight. The permanent council president replaces the present confusing system that appoints a new president from among EU members every six months. The new high representative for foreign policy will have a portfolio (and budget) in the European Commission as well as a large ¡°diplomatic¡± service. The idea is that the EU should become both more powerful and more accessible for America, China, India and elsewhere.

But it is hard to see the political leaders of America, China and India, or even their foreign ministers, ever taking Mr Van Rompuy and Lady Ashton entirely seriously. Instead they will talk, as now, to their counterparts in big countries like Germany, France and Britain. That will largely vitiate any notion of the EU at last speaking with one voice, or of answering the famously mythical Kissinger question about whom to call when an outsider wants to talk to Europe.

Now every inoffensive Belgian can dream of something
It is just as hard to believe that Germany¡¯s Angela Merkel and France¡¯s Nicolas Sarkozy wanted such an outcome when they first resurrected the Lisbon treaty from the bones of the EU constitution. They accepted it now mainly to preserve their own grip on the EU. Many Eurosceptics argue similarly, because they prefer nation-states to Brussels.Tiffany silver   Yet in truth a weak council president and foreign-policy boss will boost the more federalist actors on the EU stage: the European Commission and its president, Jos¨¦ Manuel Barroso, and especially the European Parliament. Indeed, the biggest winners in this, as from the Lisbon treaty itself, are the European Parliament and its pan-European parties¡ªdespite their feeble democratic mandate (see article). It is enough to make you wonder, yet again, if the treaty was worth ratifying at all.

GM seed

In the 13 years since GM seed was first farmed commercially, agriculture¡ªand Monsanto with

it¡ªhas become increasingly central to several of the world¡¯s most pressing policy debates, says

Mr Grant, a Scot who joined the company in 1981. tiffany jewelry
Nowadays he spends a good deal of his time taking

part in those debates, which range from concerns about higher prices and shortages of supply to

the use of land for growing biofuels rather than food, climate change and water. Arguments over

water, thinks Mr Grant, ¡°will dwarf the discussion that has taken place so far over food.¡±

Monsanto is also getting caught up in the debate over intellectual-property rights in food and

their implications for antitrust policy, on which Barack Obama¡¯s administration sounds less

friendly than that of George Bush. It has already marked agriculture for attention.
How successful Monsanto and rival makers of GM seed, such as DuPont and Syngenta, are in

winning round a sceptical public and policymakers will play a big part in determining how

lucrative their innovations prove to be. In public attitudes to GM food, Mr Grant believes ¡°Tiffany silver
there

¡¯s been progress everywhere compared with 15 years ago.¡± Still, Europe remains ¡°slow, a real

slouch. European farmers have been denied the right to choose.¡± Although the European Union is

slowly becoming open to imports of GM food, it is still largely opposed to growing the stuff.

Monsanto has still to complete a test of any GM seed in Britain because protesters have destroyed

its experiments. In Latin America, by contrast,Tiffany jewelry Argentina and Brazil are both growing GM corn

(maize) and soyabeans. In some ways, rising awareness of the food crisis has helped people to see

¡°GM as something with potential benefits other than just boosting the profits of Big Food,¡± says

Mr Grant¡ªto Monsanto¡¯s benefit. Well, maybe.

Turbo-charging Mendel

Monsanto¡¯s innovations fall into two categories. gucci silver bracelets
The first is breeding, which seedmakers have been doing with increasing sophistication for decades. Monsanto is able to accelerate the process of selective breeding through better mapping of a seed¡¯s genetic qualities and its suitability to grow in a particular place.

At Monsanto¡¯s research laboratory in St Louis, the company¡¯s home city, farmers on one of the many tours that are part of its marketing efforts are clearly fascinated by a piece of technology known as the corn chipper. A machine picks up an individual seed, rotates it to the right position,Gucci Necklaces
then chips off a sample, which has its genetic material analysed. (Getting the seed in the right position is the hardest step, because each one has a different shape and it is crucial that the chipper does not damage the embryo and thus stop the seed from growing properly.) The likely attributes of the plant that would grow from each seed are predicted from its DNA, the most promising seeds are planted, and the process is repeated with the seeds that those plants go on to produce.

The tour guide refers to the operation as ¡°CSI: St Louis¡±, although testing now goes on all year, at centres around the world. In the past three years this technology has helped speed up dramatically Monsanto¡¯s ability to identify and grow the most productive seed for any given location. ¡°It is the mother and father of all dating agencies: we can analyse every single seed we harvest, do a health check, guess what its grandchildren will be like, send it anywhere in the world,¡± says Mr Grant.

The second category of innovation, in which Monsanto is becoming increasingly adventurous, is genetic modification: identifying genetic traits with particular qualities and transplanting those traits into seeds to improve their performance. In essence, the goal is to pack as much technology into a seed as possible.

The biggest breakthroughs so far have been in weed and bug control.Gucci Necklace Perhaps the most common feature of Monsanto¡¯s range of seeds is that they are Roundup Ready, meaning that they are guaranteed to survive spraying with Roundup that will take out any surrounding weeds. Some plants have been bioengineered to deter pests from eating their leaves and roots, which reduces or even eliminates the need for insecticides. Farmers on their tours cannot fail to miss the display cases in which a healthy Monsanto plant grows next to a seriously ailing traditional specimen of the same variety.

Monsanto has just launched two new varieties of seed that have been engineered to be far more productive: Genuity SmartStax corn, which company trials suggest can increase yields by 5-10%; and Genuity Roundup Ready 2 Yield soyabeans, which in trials have shown yields 7-11% higher than the first generation of Roundup Ready soyabeans. Over the past couple of decades, soyabean yields have risen at an annual rate of barely 1%.

The parable of the sower

FEW companies excite such extreme emotions as Monsanto.Tiffany 1837 Necklaces
To its critics, the agricultural giant is a corporate hybrid of Victor Frankenstein and Ebenezer Scrooge, using science to create foods that threaten the health of both people and the planet, and intellectual-property laws to squeeze every last penny out of the world¡¯s poor. The list of Monsanto¡¯s sins dates back to when (with other firms) it produced Agent Orange, a herbicide notorious for its use by American forces in Vietnam. Recently ¡°Food Inc¡±, a documentary film, lambasted the company.

To its admirers, the innovations in seeds pioneered by Monsanto are the world¡¯s best hope of tackling a looming global food crisis. Hugh Grant, the firm¡¯s boss since 2003, says that without the sort of technological breakthroughs Monsanto has achieved the world has no chance of doubling agricultural output by 2050 while using less land and water, as many believe it must. Mr Grant, of course, would say that. But he is not alone. Bill Gates sees Monsanto¡¯s innovations as essential to the agricultural revolution in Africa to which his charitable foundation is committed. Josette Sheeran, the head of the United Nations World Food Programme, is also a fan.

Monsanto has come a long way from its roots in pharmaceuticals and chemicals (in which capacity it made Agent Orange).tiffany 1837 bracelets
The original company was formed in 1901 to make saccharine. In 2000 it merged with Pharmacia & Upjohn, a drugmaker. Two years later the group¡¯s agricultural activities were spun off into a new Monsanto. At that time the company was best known for Roundup, a herbicide popular with farmers. Roundup is still a leading brand, but margins have been eroded by competition from Chinese producers of other forms of glyphosate weedkiller. Roundup¡¯s share of Monsanto¡¯s revenue is shrinking towards 10%. There is talk that it might be sold. ¡°It is no sacred cow. We look at it every year,¡± says Mr Grant.

Today most of Monsanto¡¯s $11.7 billion of annual sales come from seeds, increasingly of genetically modified (GM), or transgenic, varieties (see chart), and from licensing genetic traits. Indeed, it is now best known, for better or worse, for applying biotechnology to seed production, winning a string of the sort of patents on living organisms that became legal in America only after a Supreme Court decision in 1980. Gucci RingsIn July it gave its GM seed a new master brand: Genuity, a name that evokes ¡°being genuine, authentic and original¡±, according to a company spokesman. It will denote a ¡°family of innovative products that will enable farmers to do what they do best, even better.¡±
